Pro-Stock Drag Racing

Want to know about Dave Newcombe’s drag racing team?

Here is a quick summary for those new to drag racing, or who want to know more about pro-stock racing, and some stats on Dave’s team!

What is Pro Stock Drag Racing?

Pro Stock cars are the highest development of street appearing, four seat sedans or coupes using V8 engines fitted with carburettors only Minimum weight of 1043.05kg (2300 lb) including driver.

Automotive iron V8 engine using two valves per cylinder operated by pushrods. Aluminium cylinder heads permitted. Maximum engine capacity of 6571cc (401cub. inches). (Courtesy of www.andra.com.au)

Dave's Car

It’s a 2007 Pontiac GTO (Holden Monaro).

It is a professionally built, American Pro Stock car. It is basically a tube chassis wrapped in carbon fibre, running a naturally aspirated (no supercharger, turbo or nitrous) 400ci small block Chevy, which produces around 1100hp and is manually shifted, by the driver, through a liberty 5 speed transmission.

What does all this mean? A low 7 second pass over the ¼ mile. That’s 5 gears manually shifted in 4 seconds just to put it in perspective.

The Driver

Dave Newcombe, Village Motors Petrie dealer principal. Dave has been racing vehicles for more than 8 years.

He has previously owned:
• 1976 LX SS Hatchback, 400ci small block chev (National Super gas champion)
• 1967 Comaro tube chassis, 420ci small block chev (Nostalgia, Gas champion)
• 1998 Monte calo full chassis, 548 big block chev 8.20 @ 164mph
• 1970 Comaro half chassis, 620ci big block chev 9.0 @ 154mph

Who's on the Crew?

Kai Jamison – on the crew since 2006.
Glenn Weaven – on the crew since 1997.
Chris Peters – an apprentice who has found a dream job!
Al (the couzzie) Williams – a long time drag racing nut, who answers to no-one but the call of engine revs…
Dave Newcombe – of course.

Our Personal Bests

Our team’s personal best is 7.14 @ 191 mph.

Our new engine is being re-built again by John Barbagallo (The Rooster) of JB Automotive north Queensland, and with it, and our best chassis set-up yet, we hope to successfully pursue the Australian championship, and Australian records.

We’re ranked fifth overall in the 2008-2009 competition, which finished in June 2009. At any time, there are around 20 cars in the national comp, and about 12 cars will compete at any given event.

Pro Stock Race Dates

Round One: 13 September 2009, Western Sydney International Dragway (Eastern Creek). The Australian Nationals started the season off for Pro Stock cars and motorcycles. Our team was eliminated in the first round! We’re down but not out; looking forward to Perth!

Round Two: 31 October 2009, Perth Motorplex, Kwinana Beach (WA).

Round Three: 18 April 2010, Willowbank Raceway, Ipswich.

Round Four: 2 May 2010, Western Sydney International Dragway (Eastern Creek). This comp will include the Nitro Championships, which is another class of drag racing, and is sure to draw a large crowd.

Round Five: 13 June 2010, Willowbank Raceway, Ipswich. Winter Nationals, on our home turf! Anyone who wants a closer look can find us in the Group 1 pit area under the Brisbane Isuzu/Castrol marquee.

Sponsors

Our major sponsor is Brisbane Isuzu, who provide the trucks we transport the car in and generally help with the bottom line!

Our secondary sponsor is Village Motors, who employs all our mechanics and provides most of the gear we need.

Peninsula Auto Zone has been cleaning and sprucing up our car for more than two years now.

Castrol Oils provide all the oil for our engine and help keep it in top shape. For more details on drag racing, check out Andra
